Tips for Pricing Your Garage Sales Items

Tips for Pricing Your Garage Sales Items

One thing people expect to get when they go to a garage sale is a bargain. So if you want to actually get rid of all your goods, don’t price them too high. There will be those extra good value items of course, and you could perhaps put a little more on them, but make sure it is no more than about a third of the new price. Less would be better. Make sure everything is priced. Customers will often walk away rather than bother asking.

Prices on clothing should reflect your eagerness to dispose of them, rather than your desire to make a profit. Since your main reason for holding a garage sale is to de-clutter your life and space, you’ll sell more goods if the price is really low.

On the other hand, if you have some items that are really good value and you want a certain amount for them, it’s a good idea to over-price them by five or ten dollars, and then you can drop the price and still make what you wanted. The customers are happy because you agreed (or offered) to drop the price and they feel they got an extra bargain. All the same, if you have something that is really old and in good condition, have it appraised because it might be worth much more than you think. Imagine how you would feel to see one of your garage sale items in an antique store with a price tag on it many times more than what you sold it for.

If you have anything that may be valuable and you want to sell for a larger amount, try selling it on eBay or somewhere similar instead. Antique jewellery, certain kinds of toys and old coins and other collectables may be in this category.

Don’t be like some shops and place the price where it is difficult to see. All prices should be clearly visible. A slice of masking tape is the ideal way to price hard goods. Clothes can have prices placed on the original tags, where customers will naturally go to see what size they are.

If you are not sure what price to put of your items, go to a couple of other garage sales and browse - see what the competition is doing; or ask friends who go. You can also go online for guidance in pricing your items. http://www.garagesalesource.com/articles/garage_sale_pricing/ is one website with a list of items and their recommended price.
